Do The Right Thing Compare and Contrast Response

The similarity between the movie Do the Right Thing and How Bigger was born were that both had the same concept of identity and the importance of who you were within a society.  In the text How Bigger Was Born, Wright illustrates the concept of identity and how a person needs to be who they are and try to excel themselves the most that they can in society.  "Taking life into his own hands, accepting what life had made him" (pg, 461).  This last part of the Novel helped identify the importance of trying to make the best of what you have and be yourself in doing that.  And this last part also showed the true meaning of individualism by being who you are and doing the things that are really you.  Also, in the movie Do the Right Thing, the director Spike Lee also brought identity within his movie by having a variety of different races all live under the same roof.  He also magnified the importance of accepting who you are and to try to live life at your best.  One of the main characters named  Sal demonstrated this concept by owning a restaurant in a different racial community than his, he accepted himself as who he was, and realized his own limits and boundries towards his type of sucess and location of himself owning a pizza resetaurant.  This individualism was expressed in the movie by Sal which gave him  confidence and sucess with his restaurant that for awhile helped him flourish within a different atmosphere than his.  As a conclusion, this core idea all ties into the main idea of having individualism because there can't be individualism whithin a society without the people themselves of accepting of who they are and to make themselves the best that they can be.
I think that the Movie Do The Right Thing was good because it really deveoped one core idea about inequality and the affects that it can portray within a society.  In the movie, there was alot of different groups of people that all lived in the same area.  There was inequality present when the police choked a black boy to death.  This movie showed that it was the power and danger of inequality that caused all of the destruction whithin the town just because of different view points and likings others had.  I liked this movie because it showed the consequences of having inequality within the society and as a conclusion why a society should have integration so that there could be less violence and more peace.

The Promise Land Document 3

In the Promise Land Document 3, Senator Robert Kennedy talked about how our country should end violence and attain more peace.  Roberty Kennedy adressed the importance of unifying our country together instead of dividing it.  He also stated that most black and white people wanted to be integrated and joined together for the most part and that there is hope for our future.  This statment was important by Roberty Kennedy because he adressed the importance of perserverence and for our country to keep on fighting for what they believe in order to achieve their belief.  This document composed by Robert Kennedy was mainly to try to unify our whole coutry together by stating of all the blacks to not be tempted to consider using violence.  That decision will not only hurt you, but it will affect the whole country.  And Robert Kennedy adressed to the white people to help guide them along and fight along side with them with support.  If we do this, this will direct our country into the right direction and will lead everyone in our country to the persuit of happiness.  He is saying that this as a result will make our country stronger.
connection question 4:
What are the difficulties that movements face with the death of a charismatic leader?
The difficulties that movements face with the death of a charistmatic leader is that people don't know what direction to go to next.  People won't have that great leader to help guide them into the right direction and keep them strong.  Also, charistmatic leaders bring hope and confidence to their people.  When a great leader leaves his people, people then will lose their hope and confidence and will have a hard time rebuilding it. It's can be sometimes difficult to move on from the past.  Once a memory is with you, it can last forever.  The hardest part of that memory is to move on from it and recooperate from it and become stronger again.  Other difficulties that movements face are that they will feel compelled to have revenge on death of their charistmatic leader in order to feel better again.  But using violence like Roberty Kennedy said is not the right answer and will not only hurt yourself but others around you.  People need to stay strong and keep on fighting peacefully in order to overcome their conflictions and grow stronger from them.  But this is a hard concept to understand and grasp which is why there is great difficulty when people or movements  come face to face with death of someone that they once loved.

Memory, Rememory, and the Power of the Past

In chapter 9, the novel talks about the issues of memory, rememory and the power of the past a this pointof the book.  The theme of memory is being portrayed because of the power of the past that is taken place with Sethe and Beloved.   "Sethe was actually more surprised than frightening to find that she was being strangled" (pg113).  It seams to me by during this scene of the novel, Beloved came back to Sethe becasue the power of her memory that Sethe inflicted upon her and came back to hurt her becasue of the concept that Sethe killed Beloved and Beloved wanted vengence.  This also shows the power of the past becasue once you do something as extreame as kill someone, there is no hiding the past and moving on from it and it could still linger on to the present.  And Beloved came back as a ghost because she wanted to show Sethe how much she was hurt becasue of her love and fondness she had towards Sethe even though she killed her.  This concept is hidden throug out the story because as reader, we think that Beloved is a real person that has a friendship with Sethe.   But really, Beloved is a ghost that came back becasue of the power of her past.  Even Though Beloved still was angry from the past about what Sethe did to her, she still can't take away her love that she has towards Sethe which is why her name is beloved.

Emmerson's Self-reliance essay

In Emmerson's Essay, he portrays the idea of individualism and how people compare to their society.  In his writing, he is addressing that a society should be filled with diversity than instead of people all trying to be the same. "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion;  it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" (23).  Emmerson is adressing in this phrase that it is very easy and compelling to a person to be a follower.  He is also saying that this is a confliction to our society and that this is a problem.  People want to be like everybody else and to blend in with the general society to feel like they belong and feel like they are a part of something.  This quote shows that Emmerson wants people to be unique and stand out in society so that there can be more of a variety of ideas and opinions formed by people within a society.  If everyone wants to be like someone or wants to believe like someone else, they will not be expressing what they really feel.  Because of this, there will be a big gap missing within a society that will prevent a society from flourishing.

quann-Burning on again, off again

Right now there are alot turbulance and confusion right now based on a man named Terry Jones.  Right now thousands of Afghanistans are very upset and are protesting because of Terry Jones behavior and statment.  I think the problem right now is that people need to slow down and think and reflect about things before they say or act upon something.  If more people can really understand the true essence of time and what it can really do to help heal or justify a problem, then maybe right now Terry Jones might understand his statement about Burning the Koran.  If Tery Jones makes the decision to Burn down the Koran, he won't understand how it will not only effect him, but how it will effect so many other people around the world.  He will danger the lives of our troops in afghanistan and all around the world.  Just becasue of the one comment one man said.  This confliction dies in with the freedom of speech.  I think people should have their freedom of speech to a certain extent.  If someone says something against someone else is one thing, but threatening someone or something important to someone or some group of people is another thing.  I think we need to rethink and justify some of our rights and privelidges or else other people could be put in danger and will feel demorilized.

the American Crisis

This reading is about how people go through hard times and struggle.  You have deal with many things that you don't like to overcome and impower them.  Thomas Paine also said that tyranny is not easy to overcome and the harder the things get, the more gradifying your triumph is.  I agree with this because i can connect his words to my daily life.  When I really work hard for something and finally reach the pinacle of sucess, I feel a sense of pride and a huge accomplishment than rather taking shortcuts to reach my goal.  Paine also talked about how quickly a country can have a sense of fear and panic.  He's main message to this is that to have faith and to never quit and give up.  A quote that paine said that stuck to me was the following: "I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection." (53) This quote is very powerfull because it means that in life, you can't progress and better yourself if you don't ever don't try new things or do anything out of your comfort zone.  If you can't do this, then you won't be able to grow knowledge and strength and will and won't have anything to reflect upon.
